By Narda Sigala The Place Where It Began “In a world of difficult experiences, Camp Twin Lakes has always felt like a breath of fresh air to me. It is everything that someone who has faced a life challenge or lives with a disability or is facing a medical journey could ask for,” says Mason Tiner, a 22-year-old burn survivor who has spent the past 16 years as a camper and volunteer at Camp Twin Lakes. “To me, it feels like they heal the parts that can’t be fixed through science or studies or medicine, and they do it through camp.” According to the 2023 Child Welfare Survey , more than 1 in 8 children in Georgia have a disability. The results are that 5.8% of children in Georgia have some sort of functional disability and 12.6% have an official disability status.
